Drawing Caricatures for Ben B. Schwartz at Spartan Food Show 2014

By Robert Bauer | September 11, 2014 |
2014 marked the 5th straight year that Ben B. Schwartz has hired Goofy Faces to draw caricatures of attendees at the annual Spartan Food Show held in Grand Rapids, MI. It goes without saying that Ben B. Schwartz is one of our favorite clients, but I’ll say it anyway. We love drawing for them and many of the same attendees stop by for an annual caricature each time the show occurs in mid July. One of my favorite caricatures to draw each year is the Michigan Apple Queen (top right). There is a new queen every year and I draw them each time. This year’s queen was delightful but got scared when I told her that every new queen was required to sing the Michigan Apple Song in front of all the attendees by the end of the show. The Michigan Apple board would hit her up with this surprise at some point during the show and I was just giving her a heads-up. Bob, Paul and I drew for 5 hours each. Toward the end of the 5th hour, the Apple Queen came back to inform me that she just learned that there was no such thing as a Michigan Apple Song and she had been sweating the whole affair all day long for nothing. I really didn’t think she believed me until that point. Really? You took me serious? Never trust a caricature artist!

Goofy Faces Celebrates 10 Years as a Sponsor at Art & Apples Art Festival

By Robert Bauer | September 5, 2014 |

For 49 years, the Art & Apples Festival® has transformed the 30-acre Rochester Park in Rochester, MI into one of the nation’s top fine art fairs with over 290 exhibiting artists from across the country. Goofy Faces has been a proud sponsor of this event for the past 10 years. Each year I enjoy drawing close to home for 3 days and seeing so many of our customers and clients drop by to say hello or get their caricature drawn by me or the other artists I ask to work with me at the festival. This year’s festival was our busiest one to date!  We added a face painter for the first time this year and Michelle was busy all day long.

eSketches™ for Chevy in Ann Arbor!

By Robert Bauer | August 2, 2014 |

Ann Arbor hosted a soccer match between Manchester United and Real Madrid at The Big House on the campus of the University of Michigan and Chevy was on hand as a sponsor of the event. Goofy Faces was brought in to draw caricatures of guests during the match which attracted over 109,000 fans to Ann Arbor! 5 artists from around the country came and drew live digital color caricatures, known as eSketches™ for 4 hours inside a mega-size tent. Each guest was drawn as a soccer player wearing a Manchester United Jersey and then emailed their caricature after the event ended. Chevy featured their logo at the bottom of each drawing as well. The digital artists drew 155 eSketches™ during the event!2014-08-02 11.03.36 2014-08-02 11.05.47 2014-08-02 11.06.01 2014-08-02 12.40.13 2014-08-02 12.40.25-2 2014-08-02 12.40.50-3 2014-08-02 12.41.08-2 2014-08-02 14.59.27 2014-08-02 15.01.57

Senior High School All-night Parties

By Robert Bauer | June 3, 2014 |

2014 marked my 29th year of drawing caricatures at senior high school all-night parties. That works out to over 300 high school parties and over 9000 caricatures since 1985. My first gig that I ever worked was a high school senior all-night party and I have been doing them every year since that first time. Caricatures are extremely popular at these parties. Seniors will sit on the floor waiting for their turn even if it takes most of the night. Some will doze off while waiting. It can be a long night for them since most all night parties begin around 11PM and last as long as 7 hours. Now imagine doing that for a week straight. That’s what early June is like for every caricature artist I know. We all work many of these parties and we are like zombies during the daytime that entire week. It all came full-circle in 2014 though. I drew caricatures at my own son’s all-night high school party in Rochester. He was just one of the many faces I drew in June in the whee hours of the morning. 2015 will be 30 years and counting!IMG_5555 IMG_5564 IMG_5570 IMG_5576 IMG_5581 IMG_5586

Wedding Caricatures!

By Robert Bauer | April 16, 2014 |
Of all the caricature events that we are hired to draw for, wedding receptions are the fastest growing venue for the past 3 years. We’ve drawn at over 100 wedding receptions in that time. We’ve drawn caricatures at 40 weddings in 2014 alone. Amazing! For every bride that calls us to book us saying that they’ve seen caricatures at someone else’s wedding, we still meet people at bridal shows who have never even heard of this idea. It’s a great fit, actually. Guests love to hang out nearby and watch as we draw their friends and relatives. Everyone gets a good laugh and many go home with a memorable keepsake from the wedding that they will always have. As a policy we always allow the bride and groom to cut in line whenever they want their caricature. It’s a courtesy we offer them so that they can get back to their guests as quickly as possible. The rest enjoy watching the artist’s drawings take shape while they wait for their turn. Here’s a tip; make sure to have the location supply plenty of chairs for your guests to sit, wait and watch. It makes it a far more enjoyable experience like a piano bar instead of waiting in a cue like the DMV!
