Retail Face Painting Positions

Thank you for applying for one of our positions as a professional face painter.

We are seeking artistic individuals who are out-going, trustworthy, friendly and creative. It’s important that you appear clean and professional. Our face painters work with lots of families and must enjoy being around many kids. You must be at least 17 years old with reliable transportation and available to work a flexible schedule of 2 to 5 days per week, including weekends when our stands are the busiest.

 Training

Unless you are already an experienced face painter, it may be necessary for you to attend a 1 to 2-Day training course to learn how to professionally paint faces.  You will be required to purchase a minimum set of face paints and supplies which you can purchase on your own, through your instructor or from our preferred supplier, Silly Farm. Most training takes place at each location before the start of the regular season in the Spring. Each workshop lasts 2 days and is about 5 hours per day. We suggest each trainee pack a lunch or bring enough money to purchase food on sight. If you have applied for a position with us during our regular season, we will provide on-the-job training with another one of our experienced face painters during regular business hours.

Working Schedule

Once you qualify and successfully complete our training, you will have the opportunity to work flexible hours at the venue for which you applied.  The hours are basically 10AM to 5PM in most cases. Most locations are open for business on weekends starting around Easter. We then open daily around Memorial Day and remain open daily until Labor Day Weekend. Then we return to weekends-only until Halloween.

Compensation

We currently have retail locations at 9 major attractions throughout the USA. All of those locations but one offer face painting. The prices we charge guests for face painting range from $6 to $15 per face. We offer 3 different options: $6 to $9 for quarter face designs, $9 to $12 for half face designs and $12 to $15 for full face designs. Each location pays its artists based on a commission rate plus sales goal bonuses. The more you sell, the more you earn. Our commission rate varies from 20% to 30% based on position, skill-level and experience. New artists whom we train start at 20% commission and are reviewed bi-monthly during the season to determine rate increases. They are considered Freshman artists. Junior artists have at least one year of retail face painting experience under their belt and start at a commission rate of 25%. They are also reviewed bi-monthly during the season to determine rate increases. Senior artists have at least 2 years of retail face painting experience and start at a commission rate of 30%. They can work their way up to 34%. Senior artists also mentor the newer artists and know how to open and close their location.  All artists are eligible to earn bonus commissions based on meeting daily sales goals. Your manager will provide you with the weekday and weekend sales goals. Once you reach them, you earn an extra 5% commission for every dollar you sell above that. On average, our face painters earn between $9 to $15/HR based on their sales commissions. That rate does not include tips which you may not solicit but you are welcome to accept from those guests who offer them to you. Your first paycheck is paid two weeks after the end of your first work week. After which, checks arrive weekly. All checks are mailed directly to your home address from Chase Bank.

Requirements

Some of our locations require our artists to wear a Goofy Faces polo with khaki pants or shorts. Shirts are $20 and the fee is deducted from the artist’s commission check within 60 days of starting. After you get started, you may also be required to provide your own face painting kit and supplies. You can purchase face painting supplies through us at a discounted price using our preferred vendor. Your supplies are yours to keep and will come in handy if you decide to do face painting at parties and festivals on your own.

Opportunities

Painting faces at the zoo, aquarium or other similar venue is a ton of fun. Many of our face painters return each season to work for us, year after year. In addition to your retail hours, you will have the opportunity to do hourly gigs that we book in your area as well. All gigs are paid an hourly wage based on regional rates and years of experience ($55 to $100/HR). All our artists are independent contractors and are encouraged to grow their craft by pursuing additional opportunities outside their work schedule. Many of our artists earn a great living all year-round by painting faces at birthday parties, mitzvahs, kids’ events and festivals.
