Thank you for applying for one of our positions as a professional face painter.
We are seeking artistic individuals who are out-going, trustworthy, friendly and creative. It’s important that you appear clean and professional. Our face painters work with lots of families and must enjoy being around many kids. You must be at least 17 years old with reliable transportation and available to work a flexible schedule of 2 to 5 days per week, including weekends when our stands are the busiest.
Training
Typically, Goofy Faces hires experienced face painters. If you do not have years of experience please include samples (.jpegs) of the quality face painting you have done when completing the online application. Before having you join our team of artists, we may ask you to complete a 2-Day face painting workshop to learn how to professionally paint faces. The training is totally FREE but you will need to purchase a minimum set of face paints and supplies to participate. We can suggest a few local suppliers or you are welcome to use our preferred supplier, Silly Farm. They give all of our face painting artists a discount on training kits.
Most face painting training takes place on-site before the start of the regular season in the Spring. Each workshop lasts 2 days and is about 4-5 hours per day. If you have applied for a position with us during our regular season, we will provide on-the-job training with another one of our experienced face painters during regular business hours.
Working Schedule
Once you are qualified or successfully complete our training, you will have the opportunity to work flexible hours at the venue for which you applied. The hours are basically 9AM to 5PM in most cases. Many of our locations are open for business year-round while others are open for a limited season. Year-round locations are open every weekend and most weekdays, especially whenever school is out. Seasonal locations are open on weekends starting around Easter. We then open daily around Memorial Day and remain open daily until Labor Day Weekend. Then we return to weekends-only until Halloween.
Compensation
We currently have retail art stands at 8 major attractions throughout the USA that offer face painting. Prices for face painting vary by location; from as low as $12 to as much as $25 per face. You will be considered an independent contractor and Goofy Faces will be one of your clients. As a freelance face painter, you earn a sales commission. The more can you sell, the more you will earn. Your commission rate will be determined before you begin painting faces for Goofy Faces. Your commission rate can range between 25% to 45% based on your position, skill-level and experience. New artists whom we train start at lower rates at the beginning but quickly earn increases as their skill level and performance improves during the season. In addition to sales commission, all artists are eligible to earn bonus commissions based on meeting daily sales goals. Your manager will provide you with weekday and weekend sales goals. On average, our face painters earn between $15 to $25/HR based on their sales commissions, bonuses & tips. Your payments are mailed to your address or direct deposited to your bank account weekly after your first 2 weeks of painting.
Requirements
This position involves a lot of standing outdoors. It can get hot in the summertime. Our face painters are very popular on busy days so be prepared to paint a lot of faces quickly to maximize your commission. Weekends are busiest. Each of our locations requires our artists to wear a Goofy Faces polo with khaki pants or shorts. After you get started, you may also be required to provide your own face painting kit and supplies. Sharing supplies is never a good idea for proper hygiene for you or the guests. Plus, your own kit will come in handy if you decide to do face painting at parties and festivals on your own. We book most of our artists for events at each location by the hour. ($85 - $110 per hour!)
Opportunities
Painting faces at the zoo, aquarium or park is a lot of fun for everyone. Many of our face painters return every season to work for us, year after year. In addition to your retail hours, you will have the opportunity to do hourly gigs that we book in your area as well. All gigs are paid an hourly wage based on regional rates and years of experience ($85 to $110/HR). Since all our artists are independent contractors, you are encouraged to grow your craft by pursuing additional opportunities outside your work schedule. Many of our artists earn a great living year-round by painting faces at birthday parties, mitzvahs, kids’ events and festivals.
