Caricature Art by the Numbers:
It’s that time of year once again. Each year around November, the International Society of Caricature Artists holds its annual caricature convention. This is the 24th year that it has taken place. This year’s con is at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, OH. The convention lasts all week long with seminars, competitions, networking and lots of catching up with fellow artists from around the world. This is my 11th convention. Last year was the first time that I missed it in 10 years. As a former board member and president, I have invested a lot of time to help this organization grow and succeed. I am happy to see how well it continues to improve over the years. This year, I am one of the guest speakers. I am looking forward to spending the week catching up with old friends and making new ones. If you care to check out the activities on Facebook or Twitter, look for the hashtag #iscacon24.
Today is the most exciting week of the year…if you make a living as a caricature artist, that is. Artists from all over the world assemble once a year to enjoy an entire week of seminars, competitions, camaraderie and a ton of drawing at the International Society of Caricature Artists Annual Convention. ISCA (formerly known as the National Caricaturist Network or NCN) has been around since 1992 with a handful of American caricature artists gathering in Mexico for a get-away as well as a cozy convention. 22 years later and the organization has grown into a worldwide trade association with over 500 members from as far away as Mongolia! To find out more and to see who are this year’s top winners, check out ISCA’s public Facebook Page for the latest news.
While Republicans were gathering to nominate Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate, artists from Goofy Faces were busy drawing caricatures inside the CNN Grill at the Republican National Convention for 4 straight days! Lead artist, Glenn Ferguson, even arrived a day early to help prepare for this event while the convention was delayed because of Hurricane Isaac. CNN reporters, celebrities, politicians and other attending VIPs were enshrined on the back wall of the grill with their full color caricature which were drawn while they watched. Many news outlets, dropped by to watch and report on the action. Now that the RNC has ended, it’s on to the Democratic National Convention taking place in Charlotte, NC next week!
This year I was offered an amazing opportunity to speak at the TTI/Vanguard: NextGens TechnologiesConference in Miami, Florida at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. TTI/Vanguard is a unique forum for senior-level executives that links strategic technology planning to business success. Their conferences are about discovering technological possibilities for the 21st century. Five times annually, corporate and government leaders, entrepreneurs, researchers, and academicians come together to envision the future’s future technologically. In highly interactive sessions, led by a world-class Advisory Board—John Perry Barlow, Maria Bezaitis, Gordon Bell, Peter Cochrane, Deborah Estrin, Eric Haseltine, Michael Hawley, Alan Kay, Leonard Kleinrock, Douglas Lenat, Robert Lucky, Nicholas Negroponte, and David Reed—and today’s most influential thought leaders, debate is stimulated, and breakthrough ideas flourish.
Being around such innovative individuals was intimidating, to say the least. Having to give a presentation on the art of caricature to a group like this was even more nerve-racking. However, the presentation went off without a hitch and many attendees complimented me on my performance. In addition to speaking and networking, I also drew at one of their events on the last evening of the conference. Guests lined up to be drawn by one of the speakers which was a unique opportunity for them as well as myself!
